Modern education teaches children that the only reason to do things is for financial and therefore social gain. This evangelisation of transactional existence and the emphasis this places on materialism during primary socialisation is one of the base ills of our society. If people are greedy, vapid, and without empathy and compassion this is a big reason why - we literally taught them to be.
